About the workshop
Summer is a time of abundance and celebration in the kitchen garden. For some however it is a challenging time to grow veggies. Heat wave, intense summer sun, water restrictions, drought, fire, pests and other factors might make gardening harder than usual. This workshop provides tips and techniques to deal with these issues and turn your garden into a flourishing abundant cornucopia. It will inform you on not just what things grow well throughout the summer months but also how to propagate, grow, maintain them and how to harvest and use them. It will run through all the garden tasks the gardener needs to attend to for summer and how to have a healthy flourishing organic summer kitchen garden. So if you want to grow great vegetables, herbs and fruit for summer then this is the workshop for you. It will delight all your senses with both theory as well as hands-on practical and experiential sessions relating to summer in the organic kitchen garden.

About the Trainer
Nicholas Crook has 30 years experience as a gardener and Horticulturist, and studied at Pershore College of Horticulture, Worcestershire. He started growing vegetables at an early age, and worked in historic houses and nurseries in Great Britain, before emigrating to Australia. He has wide experience as an organic grower of fruit, vegetables and herbs, based on Permaculture principles. His gardening career has included garden design, consultation, propagation, garden maintenance, teaching horticulture and Permaculture, nursery management and garden writing. Nick works at Ryde College of TAFE as a teacher of Landscape and Horticulture.

This workshop will include:
- Species selection for summer, what to plant where and how to grow successfully
- Garden tasks for summer
- Preparing your soils for summer – preparation, fertilization and mulching
- Water for summer – water saving tips and techniques
- Summer propagation techniques – seeds and soft tip cuttings
- Creating a no-dig bed (for summer salad crops)
- Herbs. Create an herb spiral. (Use of herbs, herbs for health companion planting and insect repellence)
- Using the food you grow. (Creating sensational salads – eat your flowers, eat your weeds)
- Organic pest control
- Composting and plant nutrition.
