Immerse yourself for the whole weekend in the wonderful world of natural dyes with the international expert in the field. This exclusive two day workshop will be the most comprehensive of her Australia tour.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Join visiting natural dye artist, theatre costume and upcycling sustainability fashion expert designer Nicole Lamarche from Avignon France for a rare opportunity to experience one of her inspiring Natural Dye workshops.

Discover new skills at the Permaculture Sydney Institute in the beautiful surrounds of the MacDonald Valley, St. Albans as we learn to identify and harvest different local plants, flowers and berries, explore their dyeing properties. Learn new and traditional methods to extract and to create different shades and colours. Using our kitchen waste, vegetable fruit scraps and peels to create zero waste natural pigments into environmentally friendly fashion. Find out how to prepare the textiles and create the recipes for dyeing.

What the workshop will involve…

Day 1:

  • Foraging through your surrounding, gather materials for the day workshop
  • Identifying and selecting the local flowers, leaves, berries, roots medicinal herbs and tannin fibres for natural dye.
  • Using kitchen waste : peels and vegetable scraps to create natural colours.
  • Using textile fibres : cotton, silk, and wool
  • Preparing the recipes for natural dye
  • Natural Dye techniques : Drawing / Painting / Printing / Tie & Dye (Shibori)
  • Fermentation for Natural Dye

Day 2 :

  • Foraging through your surrounding, gather materials for the day workshop
  • Identifying and selecting the local flowers, leaves, berries, roots medicinal herbs and tannin fibres for natural dye. • Using fermented plants or flower for natural colouring.
  • Batik Wax Natural colour dye using beeswax
  • Revive, Reuse old clothing : transforming old fashion into new Natural Colour.
  • Beeswax Wrap making with Natural Dye fabrics by Gloria Chung

 

COURSE COSTS AND INCLUSIONS :

  •  One large cotton fabric
  • One large silk fabric
  • One wool fabric
  • Two pieces of Beeswax Wraps – one large and one small
  • Notes on Natural Dyes and Beeswax Wrap
  • You are invited to bring your own natural fibres and old clothing to experiment.

  • Meals, tea/coffee and refreshment

Nicole Lamarche

Artist Nicole Lamarche discovered natural dye through her passion for fashion and designing theatre costumes.

For over 30 years Madam Lamarche has been known as the “godmother of natural dye” .Her quest for all natural colours has lead her to exotic destinations from deep in Africa to New Zealand, Thailand, Laos, Taiwan to discover many indigenous cultures, traditions and techniques in natural dyes.

Infused with ancestral and multicultural know-how, she invites folks of all ages to engage in a life changing discovery of plants, their benefits.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Gloria Chung

Gloria Chung graduated from COFA at University of NSW with Master of Design. Miss Chung’s current practice is focusing on sustainable ethical fashion, natural dye, textile, branding and marketing for ethical businesses. She is also a beekeeper and currently the member of the steering group in Transition Bondi. “Look deep into nature and then you will understand everything better “
