Forget those four species of apples the supermarkets stock…plant yourself some more interesting and versatile ones!
There was no shortage of apple varieties at the Heritage Fruit Tree Workshop lead by Pete and Silvia who displayed over 60 varieties and who grow hundreds on their property in Victoria. Sure, not all are suitable for growing in Sydney, however with the right microclimate and management its definitely worth giving it a go. Participants learned how to espalier, graft and manage their trees saw examples of growing and management techniques and even got to taste some of those apples and pears varieties they had never heard of let alone tasted before. It was a terrific workshop and we hope to run another one in a couple of years time.
